“A Shogun car and a lot of money” inspired the legendary name of one of the most iconic Gypsy Vanner Stallions—SHOGUN. But it wasn’t just the name that made him unforgettable—his genetics added to his fame.

Cindy and I were in Wales, walking the fields with Tom Price, who was proudly showing us a few of his treasured horses. Among them: The Midget Mare, Miss Price, The Old Horse of Wales, and a striking colt named Bob the Blagdon.

As we admired them, Tom suddenly began to speak about the sire of The Midget Mare—who was also Shogun’s sire. His name: The Kent Horse.

In the middle of his description, Tom stopped. His eyes filled with emotion and reverence.

“I’d give a thousand pounds,” he said, “just to walk him in front of the boys.”

That statement has never left us. It reminds us that as stewards of the Gypsy Vanner Horse, we must always strive to produce horses so exceptional, they are truly worthy of walking in front of the boys.

In his later years, Shogun roamed freely at Gypsy Gold. With his dignified presence, he would often stroll into my office—calm and composed—to stand behind me and quietly watch as I worked at the computer.
He stood like a gentleman. Always.

Born in 1988, Shogun passed from old age in 2012. Four Shogun foals were imported, and 11 were born in the U.S.A. Shogun impressed everyone with his great manners and kind personality, and he was believed to be homozygous. He was a magnificent stallion, very impressive in presence and stature.
